a multicultural mosaic
One of the oldest civilizations in the world, India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences. Home to approximately 1.2 billion people, India defies easy descriptions. Geographically, the country has everything from deserts and majestic mountain ranges, to jungles, forests, and tropical, palm-fringed coastline, while in between you'll find languages, cuisine, customs, and clothing as diverse as the topography. With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
Day 1: Arrive and transfer to The Glenburn Penthouse in the heart of historic Calcutta for a 3-night stay in a suite with daily breakfast and afternoon tea. This discrete, elegant residence has spectacular views of iconic landmarks - from Victoria Memorial to Eden Gardens, the lush green expanse of the Maidan and the majestic bridges that cross the River Hoogly - and a rooftop pool with panoramic views across the city.
Days 2-3: Explore Calcutta on two days of touring with historical and cultural walks, visits to local markets and museums, cemeteries and churches. Includes lunch and tea on both days and dinner one night at Peshawri Restaurant. You'll also enjoy a 2-hour sunset boat cruise.
Day 4: Travel by air* and road to Glenburn Tea Estate in the Darjeeling foothills of the Indian Himalayas. Glenburn is a heavenly little plantation retreat that lies above the banks of the River Rungeet, high in the Himalayas. Enjoy a picnic at a scenic spot during the journey from the airport up to the estate. Arrive in the early evening and settle into your suite where you’ll spend 4 nights in a colonial-style bungalow. Enjoy the evening with drinks by the bonfire followed by a four-course dinner with your hosts and other guests in residence. All meals, snacks, and drinks (Glenburn tea, coffee, herbal teas and juices) are included.
Day 5: Explore the 1,600-acre private estate with an introduction to the specialized art of growing and crafting Glenburn Tea. Visit the tea fields, interact with the tea pickers and follow the journey of "two leaves and bud" into the tea factory, ending with a tea tasting session to discover the incredible variety of flavors and aromas that come from a single bush through the different seasons. Enjoy lunch at the Bungalow followed by a gentle afternoon hike, or take time to relax on one of the peaceful verandas.
Day 6: Visit Darjeeling Town - ride the Darjeeling Hill Railway "toy train", visit the famous Ghoom Monastery, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, and stroll down the historic Darjeeling Mall.
Day 7: Visit the local primary school and interact with the children during assembly. Take a two hour hike down to the Glenbum Campsite with a barbecue lunch and relax by the River Rangeet.
Days 8-9: Transfer to the airport of Bagdogra for flight to New Delhi*. Enjoy a 2-night stay at the 5-star Le Meridian New Delhi in a club level guest room and a half-day guided tour of New Delhi.
